Abstract: Random matrix models occupy an important place in modern mathematics and physics. In this lecture series, I will introduce several developments of random matrix models in physics from the perspective of a physicist, with an emphasis on their connections to two-dimensional quantum gravity. At the same time, I will mention related mathematical results, including Witten’s conjecture and Mirzakhani’s recursion formula for the volumes of moduli spaces. This recursion formula plays a significant role in Nalini Anantharaman’s recent work on random hyperbolic surfaces.
