Research

Undergraduate students with outstanding GPA are encouraged to do research, in order to integrate and reinforce mathematical knowledge learned from course work, and to develop their innovative spirit and practical ability. Financial support is provided jointly by the Ministry of Education, the Municipal Government of Beijing, Peking University and SMS.

Sophomores who have successfully completed courses with GPA above 3.0 can apply for research grants for undergraduate research. Each year, about 30% of students receive grants to conduct/ practice research. Generally, a research project is supervised by a faculty advisor who interacts with the students to provide support. In addition to submitting an application for grant, students are required to write a mid-term report in the junior year and final report in the senior year. The advisors give their opinions and suggestion on students’ research work at the mid-term review and final evaluation. The projects are evaluated according to students’ time spent on the research. The students who spent 600 to 800 credit hours get 4 credits and those who spent less than 600 credit hours get 3 or 2 credits. The research credits are counted towards the total required credits.

Students are benefited greatly by conducting original research which help them integrate and reinforce mathematical knowledge learned from course work, develop their scientific and writing skills, improve ability to deal with practical problems, and lay a solid foundation for the graduate thesis and academic research and scientific innovation in the future.
