The Institute of Mathematics (IM) of Peking University, founded in 1980 under the proposal of a renowned mathematician and educator Min-Teh Cheng (Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), is one of the first institutes for mathematical research in China. Sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China and subordinated to the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) of Peking University, IM has made tremendous contributions to the development of disciplines and cultivation of talents for SMS.

IM has established a widely praised “two-year rotation” rule for all members (especially young academics), which means to release some of the active scholar members from heavy teaching work and let them concentrate on mathematical research for a special period. Currently, most of the members hold or participate in many research grants. E.g. the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Key Program, General Program, Young Scholars fund, etc.

IM encourages and organizes various conference or workshop, and invites celebrated mathematicians to give lectures on the cutting edge of advance in mathematics. The “Friday Seminar” has become a regular activity and attracts many promising scholars to make presentations. IM also funds domestic and foreign scholars to visit for short term or long term to improve academic exchanges and expand cooperation.

The Institute of Mathematics is responsible for the construction of post-doctoral research station. By providing about 10 post-doctoral research fellow positions each year, IM continuously creates the convenience for their research career in mathematics.
